Sinaloa Cartel Co-Founder "El Mayo" Sentenced to Life in Prison

One of the world's most powerful drug lords has finally faced justice. On Monday, July 20, 2026, a US federal judge in Brooklyn sentenced Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada Garcia to life in prison. The 76-year-old co-founded the Sinaloa Cartel alongside Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán, building it into a criminal empire that dominated global drug trafficking for nearly four decades.

US District Judge Brian Cogan also ordered Zambada to forfeit $15 billion — the estimated profits from his role as the cartel's principal leader. Prosecutors described him as "one of the most — if not the most — prolific and powerful narcotraffickers in the world," responsible for flooding American communities with cocaine and fentanyl over his long criminal career.

Zambada's arrest in July 2024 came in a dramatic fashion. El Chapo's son, Joaquin Guzmán Lopez, deceived him into boarding a small plane, claiming they were flying to inspect airstrips in northern Mexico. The aircraft instead landed in Texas, where US agents were waiting. The elaborate deception by a fellow cartel figure stunned the criminal underworld.

In court, Zambada spoke through a Spanish translator and issued a rare apology. "I am sorry for the harm I caused and for the example I set," he told the judge, urging younger generations to "choose a different path." He called for an end to cartel violence, stating: "Too many lives are lost, too many families are destroyed." His guilty plea last year had already spared him the death penalty.

Analysts warn, however, that the conviction is unlikely to disrupt cartel operations significantly. Sinaloa's networks have already adapted to his absence since his 2024 arrest. Meanwhile, El Chapo's son, who engineered the betrayal, also faces federal sentencing. US officials celebrated the ruling as a historic milestone in the long war against international drug trafficking.
