Spanish Scientists Create Material That Cools Buildings Without Electricity

As heatwaves grow more extreme, researchers in Spain have built a low-cost coating that lowers indoor temperatures by more than 10 degrees Celsius using no power at all.

This summer, Spain has faced one heatwave after another. Cities have broken temperature records, and air conditioners are running nonstop. Now, a team of Spanish scientists says they have found a simple solution. They created a special material that can cool buildings by more than 10 degrees Celsius without using any electricity at all.

The material works through a process called passive radiative cooling. It reflects almost all sunlight away from a building's surface. At the same time, it releases heat from inside as infrared radiation, sending it straight into the sky. Because the material needs no fans, pumps, or power source, it keeps working day and night. Scientists tested it on rooftops during recent heatwaves, and the results surprised even the research team.

Experts say this kind of technology could change how cities handle extreme heat. It costs far less than air conditioning and produces no carbon emissions. Poorer countries, where air conditioners are often too expensive, could benefit the most. Researchers now plan to test the coating on a larger scale, hoping to use it on rooftops, walls, and even vehicles. If it works as well in real life as it did in tests, it could become an important tool in the fight against rising global temperatures.
