More Companies Adopt the Four-Day Work Week

A growing number of companies worldwide are moving to a four-day work week after trial results showed higher productivity and happier employees. Experts say the shift could reshape how people balance work and life.

A growing number of companies around the world are switching to a four-day work week. Employees now work four days instead of five, but they still receive their full salary. The idea started as a small experiment a few years ago, but it has since spread to thousands of companies in Europe, Asia, and North America. Business leaders say the change did not happen overnight. Many firms tested the schedule for six months before deciding to make it permanent.

Trial results have surprised many skeptics. Several studies found that productivity stayed the same or even improved, while employees reported feeling less stressed and more focused at work. Workers said they had more time for family, exercise, and rest, which helped them avoid burnout. Some companies also saw fewer sick days and lower staff turnover after making the switch. Managers say employees now use meetings more efficiently and spend less time on distractions during the workday.

Not every industry can easily adopt this model, however. Hospitals, factories, and retail stores often need workers every day of the week, so shifting to four days is more complicated for them. Critics also warn that a shorter week could increase pressure to finish the same amount of work in less time. Still, supporters believe the model will keep growing as more companies compete to attract and keep talented workers. Governments in several countries are now studying whether to support the four-day week through new labor laws.
